Bayeux is a city proud of its ancient religious heritage and many old houses and mansions which were built between the 15th and 18th centuries. Of course, Bayeux is most famous for the elaborate and well-preserved Bayeux Tapestry masterpiece. This was embroidered by Queen Matilda in the 11th century.

Interesting town fact
Attracting several million tourists each year, the Bayeux Tapestry is a 70m long embroidered linen which recounts the dramatic story of the Normal invasion. It’s the only pictorial record of William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066 which led to him becoming King of England. You can see the Tapestry in all its glory at the Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux.
