Amsterdam

Undoubtedly one of the jewels of Europe, and not just because of the stunning 17th century canals and world famous museums.

There's a vast selection of restaurants, bars & clubs where you will be entertained. Whether you’re in the mood for a laid-back café, a trendy lounge bar or a hip nightclub, the city of Amsterdam has it all.

Chill out in Amsterdam
A large numbers of events on and around Amsterdam’s many waterways will take place in 2010. From 19 to 23 August the Amsterdam will host SAIL 2010. Besides a lively program of music and culture, there will be a massive fleet of no less than 600 (historical) ships to be admired in the harbour. And of course a canal cruise is an absolute ‘must’ on any City Break to Amsterdam. There are plenty of options from which to explore Amsterdam's canals; from a private boat rental, a guided tour on the canal bus or a dinner cruise.

Make new friends in Amsterdam
If you’re curious what that favourite Dutch word ‘gezelligheid’ (cosy) really means, a visit to an authentic Dutch pub known as the ‘brown café’ is a must. Some of the nicest brown cafés can be found around the Zeedijk, in the Jordaan district and the along the Utrechtsestraat. When it is fabulous sunny weather and all the terraces are packed, just grab something from the store and head to the park. Sit out in the sun at the Westerpark, by the elaborate fountain at the Sarphatipark or people watch in the Vondelpark.

See things differently
Whether it’s Van Gogh or street art that floats your boat, Amsterdam is perfect for art lovers. There are over 50 museums in the city for you to discover and lose yourself in. Have a weakness for purses? The Museum of Bags and Purses (Tassenmuseum Hendrikje) displays a comprehensive collection of ladies bags from the Middle Ages to present day. And find the best in young Dutch design in the Red Light Fashion District, where several buildings have been transformed into exhibition spaces for talented clothing designers.

Explore Amsterdam’s surroundings
In the surroundings of Amsterdam you can visit a variety of cultural and recreational areas. Why not visit one of the typical Dutch fishing villages like Volendam or Marken? In the open air museum Zaanse Schans you can experience Holland like it was in the 17th and 18th century. For exclusive shopping take the train and within 15 minutes you are in the historic city centre of Haarlem. Or do you prefer hanging out on the beach at Zandvoort or Velsen?

Fun packed day
- Java Island: Wander around this architectural gem for a modern take on traditional canal houses
- Canal bike tour: Get active on a rented canal bike and experience the city from the water.
