There are plenty of activities on offer in Asturias to give you that all important taste of Spain.

The tiny villages, coves and beaches around Llanes make a delightful day's excursion. There's a coastal pathway linking Bustio, to the east of Llanes, and Celorio to the west. Many of these villages show the historical influence of the 'Indianos' - those Asturians who emigrated to South America, made money, and later built mansions in - and donated money to - their native villages.

Go fishing. Asturias is known for its clean, clear rivers that flow through lush green countryside and are populated by salmon and trout. Many operators offer fishing excursions; you'll need to buy a license before you cast your line.

Yachting types should head to Gijón whose marina has a long and interesting history. Trips in sail and motorboats can be arranged. If you're giving your sea legs a break, stay on land and take a stroll around the old fishing quarter of Cimadevilla.
