Hotels and Campsites near the port

On arrival at the Europoort terminal near Rotterdam many drivers set off immediately for distant destinations. But some like to begin or end their trip by staying for a night near the port. Here’s my selection of some of the best hotels and campsites to try.

Cheap and cheerful

Bastion Hotel Europort

There’s not a lot of budget-priced choice around the Europoort terminal, but you won’t feel like you’re scrimping on comfort at the three-star Bastion Hotel near Rotterdam. And it’s just four miles from the ferry ramp. This 66-room modern hotel is close to the centre of the historic fortified city of Brielle and the watersports of Briesle Lake. The hotel itself has a relaxed restaurant and bar that are ideal for families, smart bedrooms, free wifi and easy parking.

Perfect pitch

Camping De Krabbeplaat

You’ll find Camping de Krabbeplaat in a grassy wooded area next to Brielle Lake, just a short distance from the Rotterdam ferry. It’s a popular area for watersports and there’s a small sandy beach. The four-star facilities include a shop, snack bar, games room, tennis court, playground and children’s animal farm. The pitches are generous, with electricity AND a cable TV connection.

A cut above

Hotel de Beer Europort

Just five minutes from the ferry you can be relaxing in this four-star hotel with modern rooms, a fine restaurant and a sports centre that includes indoor pool, all-weather tennis, mini golf and even a football pitch. The hotel hires bikes to explore neighbouring islands and canals… they’ll even provide a picnic basket to take with you.

Cheap and cheerful

Grand Hotel Central Rotterdam

It may take 20-30 minutes to drive into the centre of Rotterdam from the port but there’s a good-value hotel waiting for you there. The family-owned Grand Hotel is a stylish old art deco building close to the city’s shops and restaurants. A wood-panelled reception area and simple, bright modern rooms belie the lowly price tag. The breakfast buffet is included but there’s no restaurant.

Perfect pitch

Camping de Klepperstee

The seaside town of Ouddorp is a 45-minute drive from the ferry, but worth it for this four-star site a ten-minute walk from a quiet beach, on an island surrounded by cycle and walking trails. Arty sculptures are dotted around and facilities are good: a shop, bar, café, children’s pool, playgrounds, tennis courts and shower blocks are heated. For a little extra you can even rent pitches with private bathrooms.

A cut above

Palace Hotel Noordwijk

Head north for 30 minutes to find the seaside resort of Nordwijk. On the seafront is this grand old holiday hotel that can make your trip begin or end with a treat. There’s an art deco ambience to the green turrets, curved balconies and period bedrooms overlooking a sandy beach but facilities are bang up to date with a spa, pool, gym, kids’ club and lovely terrace to eat and drink outside.
